The German Limescommission (DLK)

Coordination of research, management, running and presentation of the Roman Frontier in Germany

The German Limescommission was founded in 2003 in order to coordinate research, management, running and presentation of the Roman Frontier in Germany. It is made up from political representatives of the five German federal states that hold remains of the Roman Frontier, the respective heads of heritage services, as well as four members representing key stakeholders: museums on the frontier, universities, research institutions and the Verein Deutsche Limes-Strasse, a body acting for the communes and tourist associations along the Roman land frontier in Germany (“Obergermanisch-Raetischer Limes”).

The Commission publishes the semi-annual information journal ‘Der Limes’ as well as the series ‘Beiträge zum Welterbe Limes’. It supports research on the Roman Frontier in Germany through PhD scholarships and the organisation of conferences. The DLK is represented in international bodies such as the Intergovernmental Committee of the World Heritage Site “Frontiers of the Roman Empire”, its Management Group and the Bratislava Group.

The DLK is based at the Saalburg fort near Bad Homburg in Germany.
